HUGH MACKAY: WHAT KIND OF SOCIETY ARE WE BECOMING?

The most powerful messages coming from contemporary Australian
society appear to contradict each other. Personal wealth is
increasing but so is homelessness. Our cultural diversity is a
shining example to the world, yet many Australians still seem to
regard it as a fatal flaw in our national character.
Hugh Mackay will pick his way through these and other contradictions.
He finds evidence of a fundamental shift in our thinking: less
resistant to change, more prepared to take control of our own lives
and more interested in reforming communities.
Hugh Mackay is a psychologist, social researcher and writer who has
made a life-long study of the attitudes and behaviour of the
Australian community. He has also written five books in the field of
social psychology: 'Reinventing Australia', 'The Good Listener',
'Generations', 'Turning Point' and 'Media Mania'. His latest book is
'Right & Wrong: How To Decide For Yourself' (Hodder, 2004).
Hugh is a graduate of the University of Sydney and Macquarie
University, and a Fellow of the Australian Psychological Society. In
recognition of his pioneering work in social research, he has been
awarded honorary doctorates by New South Wales, Macquarie and Charles
Sturt universities.
He is a regular contributor to newspapers, radio and television, and
is the author of four novels: 'Little Lies', 'House Guest', 'The
Spin' and 'Winter Close'.
