Skills Development Workshop
ENGAGING STAKEHOLDERS IN PUBLIC POLICY
Thursday 30 October 2003
This one day course comprises the fifth module of IPAA's suite of practical policy courses for public sector participants.
Course overview:
By definition, public policy affects the public, yet we have traditionally not involved members of the public meaningfully in the development of public policies. The Gallop Government, however, has attached a high priority to the engagement of stakeholders in public policy, believing it helps create a more inclusive and equitable society and strengthens our democratic institutions. Moreover, the public now expects to be consulted and heard.
This practical, interactive workshop is designed to enhance understanding of the benefits of public engagement and the various strategies for making it happen. The course includes a combination of guest speakers, group discussions, and case studies.
Course Content
· What is meant by 'public participation'?
· The benefits of consultation;
· The barriers to participation;
· Navigating the potential pit-falls of consultation;
· Planning your consultation.
Course Outcomes
